The Starring In Your Own Life Lesson-FlashForward

September 24, 2009

It’s hard to go anywhere without seeing promos or billboards for the new TV series FlashForward. It debuts tonight on abc but I had a look at the show during a preview screening last week.

The premise is that everyone simultaneously blacks out for two minutes plus. During that time they glimpse into the future. While they glimpse, the world erupts into a burning mess.

I’m not really into apocalyptic sc-fi, and the image of a high rise gashed by fire made me flinch, but this is the only show I saw during the screenings that makes me want to see what happens next.

It’s also the only show I saw that featured an African American, Courtney B. Vance. And there’s cartoon character, well sort of.

Behind the scenes of the show there are lotsa Starring in Your Own Life lessons.

One of the creators, David S, Goyer, said at the screening that he wrote the spec script during the last writer’s strike.  So instead of bemoaning the lack of work, he got to work not knowing if anyone would buy into it.

And talk about writing a Long Term Script, Goyer says he’s already planned the show for five years. He says all the clues for those five years are on the mysterious board that befuddles series star Joseph Fiennes throughout the program.

One day Goyer was writing the script at a restaurant and he spied the woman he wanted to cast in one of the lead roles. He never acknowledged her. Her comment preview night, “Always put yourself together when you go out.”

She did and Sonya Walger, of Lost fame got the role.
