Star Report: Nate Henn

July 13, 2010

There is so much more to today’s youngins than The Hills and Jersey Shore.

The life’s work of 25-year-old Nate Henn from Wilmington, Delaware is a somber reminder of that.

He was part of an organization called Invisible Children. The San Diego-based group advocates for child soldiers, an issue featured in the Leonardo DiCaprio movie Blood Diamonds.
In real-life Renn raised money and did everything else he could do to help rehabilitate the young combatants. That included going to Uganda.

He arrived there a day before our country celebrates Independence Day.

Invisible Children reports he was killed during bombings in Uganda timed to coincide with the last day of the World Cup. Renn was struck by shrapnel while playing with the children he came to serve.

Somalia’s militant Islamic group Al Shabab has claimed responsibility.

In Uganda Renn was known as “oteka” or “the strong one.”

I call him the heroic one.
