RIP Jack Lalanne, The Godfather of Fitness

February 14, 2011

In this vintage video, Jack Lalanne shows you how to work out your smile

Before Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons or Jillian Michaels, there was Jack Lalanne, aka “The Godfather of Fitness.”

Before barre exercises, he was showing students how to work out with a chair.

Before there were fancy health clubs, he started his own in Oakland.

I just saw him on an infomercial this weekend and thought to myself, “That man never stops.”

I woke up to the news that he has passed away at the age of 96.

Before his love for carrot juice, Lalanne was a self-admitted junk food junkie. He described his pre-fitness life as miserable. He even contemplated suicide.

What a difference fitness and fresh foods make.

The Other Love of His Life

I once interviewed Jack’s wife, Elaine Lalanne. She was promoting a book, and try as I might, I could not get him to even make a cameo appearance.

He was content to be supportive of his wife, off camera. Although he didn’t speak, his actions spoke volumes.

The couple met cute. While she puffed on a cigarette and chomped on a doughnut, he told her to start eating   “apples, oranges and bananas.”

She didn’t slap him. She married him.

They were together for 51 years.

Jack’s Final Post

Before leaving us, Jack left this final blog post behind::
“Hope you all are keeping your New Year’s Resolutions to taking care of the most important person on this earth, YOU!!!”

He often said, “I can’t die, it will ruin my image.”

I don’t think so.

That reminds me, it’s time for my workout.
